When I began teaching 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts in New York City, I also began writing curriculum. Using the ELA State Standards as my guide, I set about planning units to meet the specific needs and interests of each group. It was a ton of work, but my students were awakened by reading a great book and seeing their own writing published on the bulletin board.
My school made a change towards interdisciplinary planning and I began to lead a team of English, Social Studies and Art teachers in planning units with learning outcomes and projects that went across subjects.
I have continued on this path, writing curriculum for my own classes, teaching others how to write curriculum and now writing curriculum for the Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ.
Please contact me if you have a curriculum you’d like me to write or review.
